Dental implants are artificial tooth replacements that are used to counter tooth loss. The procedure is categorized as a form of prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry through it falls into the category of cosmetic dentistry as well. Strong, durable and natural in appearance, dental implants are among the most successful dental procedures performed. In many cases, dental implants may be the only logical choice for the restoration of all necessary functionality of the teeth and supporting structures.
Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts like crowns and fillings. Implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss. They can also be used in combination without restorative procedures.Dental implants can also be used to support a bridge which replaces more than one missing tooth, and can be used with dentures which makes teeth more stable and more strongly rooted, it also reduces effect of gums ‘sliding down’ and leaving the teeth root uncovered.
The technology of dental implants has made it virtually impossible to distinguish natural teeth from dental implants. This is achieved with the help of integration of dental implant into a healthy law bone. The procedure unusually takes one visit to a dentist, but there is a time period after that, duration which the implants ‘get used’ to the bone, and it’s called Osseo Integration.
Dental implant is a screw made out of titanium and imbedded into a jaw bone, with a dental crown placed on it. A small diameter hole (pilot hole) is drilled at the point where the tooth/teeth are missing, into which the implant screw is fitted.
After the initial pilot hole has been drilled into the point where tooth is missing, it is slowly widened to allow fitting of the dental screw. Following this placement, a Protractile cover screw is placed on top to allow the area around the dental implant to heal and anchor (Osseo Integration). After a period of time, protective cover is removed and a temporary dental crown is placed on top of the implant. The process is completed when the temporary crown is replaced with a permanent crown.
